A Selection of Australian mRNA Vaccine Manufacturers is likely in the Coming Days

According to Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, the federal government is nearing completion of a shortlist of firms to manufacture mRNA vaccines in Australia.

Australia presently imports all mRNA vaccines, including those from Pfizer, and only produces AstraZeneca dosages in-house.

On May 21, the federal government announced a market approach, granting grant funds for onshore mRNA vaccine manufacture. The market approach was open until July 16th. Initially, hopeful bidders expected a decision by the end of August, but this never happened.

The only business in South Australia to react to the approach to market was a partnership led by BioCina, a biologics CDMO with a 4600m2 production facility in Thebarton. The manufacturing facility, according to BioCina, is “the most sophisticated facility of its kind in Australia.”
